the semitic word dabar is directly translated but for more nuanced
a whole new set of principles defined the hebrew language (deriving of course from syro-phoenecian) starting as early as 1000 BC the language of revelation the language of shared purpose the language of history being lived toward a goal
the hebrews had a full cultural identity and a distinctiveness by 600 BC the core of this identity was a religious focus quite unique and quite distinct from everything else the world around
ok i guess i'll have to start thinking of myself now as a buddist-presbyterian-catholic jew
maybe someday i'll be a muslim too
for the moment its hard enough to work out how to be catholic without breaking communion with my presbyterian brothers and sisters
i suppose its not such a problem to maintain communion with my evangelical friends because they so rarely celebrate communion i might never come across a situation where i would have to refrain from partaking
in other news i just spent two hours shelling acorns i came across a big fat grub in one of them and smaller grubs in a few others
i threw those out but i suppose there are people in other parts of the world who eat those things
tomorrow i will grind the nuts into flour and make this year's batch of acorn bread
i think this will be my new october tradition instead of carving pumpkins i will make acorn bread
then again there is something therapeutic about squeezing pumpkin goop through one's fingers
just the mention of acorn bread sets saliva working in my mouth my memory of it comes as a moment so sweet my father ate the lions share of it the portion that came to me and he loved it
grubs with garlic in saute' hmnh not bad
what is good we shall embrace it what is true we shall sing it what is beautiful we shall admire it with a deep awe
hey i can't post a comment on stolen poems anyone have any advice i get rejected as not a follower even though i'm up there as a follower
jewish verse has proven itself far more durable than anything greek
i once listened to the illiad on tape on a long road trip man o man i thought to myself those folks were sort of obsessed with killing killing killing but at least they told the stories and wrote the poems
the illiad ends in a miasma of faint hope closer to despair the trend in jewish writing and in the christian parallels was always more hopeful more hope more hope
i am presently trudging through the 20th century odyssey - a modern sequel by nikos kazantakis
that guy was amazing - not Odyseus (who also was) i mean nikos
p your hard view of the world and thinking and writing is still a pain in the ass no matter who you claim to be
after bin laden was killed the word went out and many people in catholic circles preached that christians do not rejoice in the murder of anyone...and we prayed for the repose of his soul

Yes, that's true----and the killing of OBL was rather dubious. But the quote reads as approval of..OBL's tactics.
No, we aren't all jews.
Logos isn't part of the OT.
the qoute is just a quote
what one man said
a man who now is dead
the word become flesh
is a very jewish idea
Logos....very greek idea. The language it was written in, as with the rest of the Gospels
The word probably not in aramaic, as with many greek terms (ie, hebrew was not a language until 4-5 AD--more like a dialect, if that)
the semitic word
dabar

what sort of poet values semitic dogma over...the Iliad? EzraPound would call you some puritan-zionist sort,or worse.
Logos is.... reason and light. Dabar--
